TCC Student Success Rates Set New Record

TCC Student Success Rates Set New Record

I am excited to report that Tallahassee Community College has set a new institutional record for one of our most important student success metrics – graduation. As of our most recent student cohort, TCC’s three-year graduation rate now stands at a historic 42 percent. This represents a staggering five percent increase over the prior year and a full 15 percentage points above the average of our peers nationally. In addition, graduation rates for nearly all student subgroups have increased, and…

Recognition

Recognition

What a great time for Tallahassee Community College! This month, we presented to our District Board of Trustees a Strategic Plan Year Three update. We have a lot to celebrate, and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t receive an email, a phone call or text, or am pulled aside by a member of the community so that they can express their support and pride in our College. Just in the past few months: TCC was once…

Florida’s Colleges Measure Up

Florida’s Colleges Measure Up

Last week, Florida TaxWatch, an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit taxpayer research institute, released a report on the economic impact of the Florida College System (FCS). It assessed the return-on-investment (ROI) to both our students and the state of Florida, and the results are significant. For students, a graduate of an FCS institution can expect increased earnings of up to $838,023 with an average ROI of 12% over the course of their career. For Florida, the FCS generates nearly 10,000 jobs each year (beyond…

Support TCC, state colleges: Vote ‘yes’ on Amendment 7

Florida voters will have the opportunity in November’s general election to decide the fate of 13 constitutional amendments, including Amendment 7, which includes first responder and military member survivor benefits, along with public colleges and universities. A “yes” vote on Amendment 7, also known as the First Responder and Higher Education Amendment, will recognize and protect the role that Tallahassee Community College and the 27 other Florida College System institutions have in the state’s workforce training, economic development and academic…

Legislative Update

Legislative Update

Now that Florida’s 2018 Legislative Session has come to a close, I wanted to provide an update. This year, there were several major bills under consideration that impacted the Florida College System. One of the biggest was the Community College Competitiveness Act of 2018 (SB 540) which proposed radical changes to FCS governance with a central State Board of Community Colleges, revising the System’s performance-based funding metrics for the fourth time in four years, and imposing restrictions on direct support…

2017-18 Budget

2017-18 Budget

I want to inform you on the status of the 2017-18 budget that was presented to the Board of Trustees and approved today. You may not realize that TCC faces a nearly $4 million budget shortfall this coming year as a result of a $2.9 million cut in state appropriation and a projected $864,278 decrease in tuition and fees revenue. The Florida College System had originally requested budget increases to offset rising costs and launch new initiatives that serve our…

It makes no sense to put your best foot forward if you are going to drag the other behind

Budgets are more than numbers. They reflect priorities and values. Florida lawmakers ended the 2017 legislative session by approving an $82.4 billion budget for the coming year. If approved by the governor, this budget will cut $30 million from the Florida College System while simultaneously increasing funding to state universities by $232 million. What has been lost in the media coverage of this year’s legislative session is that the 28 colleges had requested 100 million new dollars this year to…

Recognizing Student Achievement and Engagement

Recognizing Student Achievement and Engagement

Last Friday, I had the honor of accompanying three of our students to the All-Florida Academic Team Awards Ceremony hosted by the Florida College System and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society. These awards recognize the most outstanding students in the Florida College System based on academic achievement, leadership and service to the community. Sandra Artecona and Kelxy Butler were this year’s award-winners from TCC, and Brianna Mead was also in attendance with us to help introduce keynote speaker FSU…
